Nigerian Woman Burned Alive Over Blasphemy Accusation Against Muhammad

On 1 September 2025, in Kasuwan-Garba town, Niger state, northern Nigeria, a shocking incident unfolded when a woman named Amaye, who worked as a food vendor, was burned to death by an angry mob. The crowd accused her of blaspheming against the Prophet Muhammad, leading to this horrific act of violence.

The trouble started innocently enough. A man jokingly asked Amaye to marry him while she was at work. Her reply, which some people nearby found offensive to their religious beliefs, sparked outrage. Before long, a group gathered and attacked her, setting her on fire. Sadly, police and security teams arrived too late to save her.

Local police have called this “jungle justice” and are now investigating to catch those responsible. Spokesman Wasiu Abiodun explained that people should not take the law into their own hands and urged everyone to stay calm. He said an argument like this shouldn’t end in death, but unfortunately, it did.

This kind of killing isn’t rare in northern Nigeria, where Islamic Sharia law runs alongside regular laws in many states. Blasphemy is seen as a serious crime there, and mobs sometimes act quickly without waiting for a trial. Rights groups like Amnesty International say these accusations are often used to settle personal fights or arguments, turning small disagreements into deadly attacks. In recent years, at least two other people have been lynched in similar ways. For example, in 2022, a student named Deborah Samuel was beaten and burned in Sokoto state after being accused of blasphemy. Last year, a butcher called Usman Buda was stoned to death in the same area for the same reason.

Nigeria’s laws protect freedom of speech, and the country’s top court has said blasphemy claims must be proven in a real courtroom, not by crowds. But deep divisions over religion and justice make it hard to stop these tragedies. Critics argue that more needs to be done to protect people and prevent mob violence in the region.
