How Allah Created HUMAN?
A single line of the Qur’an says the fluid of human reproduction issues from between the spine and the ribs. For thirteen centuries, Islam’s own commentators read it exactly that way. Then modern anatomy arrived — and an entire global apologetic industry set about explaining what the line had really meant all along.
خُلِقَ مِن مَّآءٍ دَافِقٍ يَخْرُجُ مِنۢ بَيْنِ ٱلصُّلْبِ وَٱلتَّرَآئِبِ

A statement about the body, made in plain words
Before any argument can begin, the sentence has to be read as it stands.
Of the many verses enlisted in the modern campaign to prove that the Qur’an anticipated modern science, this one is the cleanest test case — not because it is the most quoted, but because so little about it is in dispute. The translation is not seriously contested. The grammar is agreed. The relevant biology is settled, unglamorous and taught in every medical school on earth. Everything that could be argued about has already been agreed by the people who would most like to argue.
Two features of the passage matter, and the tradition itself supplies both. First, verse 7 continues verse 6: the thing described as proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs is the fluid named in the preceding line. Second, the region named — aṣ-ṣulb, the backbone or spine, and at-tarā’ib, the ribs or chest-bones — is the upper trunk. Chest and spine. Not the pelvis, not the groin.
That yields a locatable, checkable claim: the fluid from which a human being is made emerges from between the backbone and the ribs. It can be held against two independent records — what Islam’s own pre-modern scholars understood the words to mean, and what anatomy shows. Neither record was compiled by a critic. One was compiled by the tradition’s most revered exegetes; the other by physiologists with no interest in the question.
A verse that could be wrong is a verse worth reading carefully. This one can be, and is.
Thirteen centuries of agreement, entered into evidence
These readings were formed with no microscope and no motive to accommodate later science. That is precisely what makes them reliable witnesses to the plain, original sense of the words.
Not one of these readings mentions the testicles. Not one mentions the ovaries. Every single one locates the emergence of reproductive fluid in the upper trunk — exactly where the words put it. This is not a hostile reconstruction. It is the tradition’s own settled understanding of its own scripture, held without controversy for roughly thirteen hundred years.
Where the fluid actually comes from
There is nothing novel or contested in what follows. It is ordinary human physiology.
Sperm cells are produced in the testicles — in the coiled seminiferous tubules — and are stored and matured in the epididymis alongside each testicle. The testicles sit in the scrotum, outside and below the pelvis. The fluid that carries them is manufactured by three sets of glands: the seminal vesicles, which supply most of the volume, the prostate, and the small bulbourethral glands. All of these lie in the pelvis, at the base of the trunk. At emission, semen travels from the testicles and glands through the pelvic region and out. It does not originate in, and does not pass through, the chest or the mid-spine at any point.
The female contribution fares no better under the verse’s plain sense. The egg is released from the ovaries, which sit in the pelvis, and travels down the fallopian tubes to the uterus. Nothing in female reproduction emerges from the ribs.
On the plain reading — the reading the tradition itself gave — the verse is mistaken. The reproductive fluids do not issue from between the backbone and the ribs. They come from organs at the base of the trunk, some of them outside the body cavity entirely.
Four defences that cannot all be right
Each is stated here at its strongest before it is weighed. That is the only fair way to test an argument — and, in this case, the most revealing.
The verse refers to descent — the man’s backbone, the woman’s chest
This is the classical reading in gentler clothing, and it inherits the classical reading’s problem intact. It still situates the origin of reproductive material in the spine and the chest.
It describes where the sex glands first form, near the kidneys, before they descend
The strongest of the four, and it rests on a real fact. In the developing embryo the gonads do first appear high in the abdomen near the kidneys, between the spine and the lowest ribs, before migrating downward; the adult testicles retain blood supply and nerves descending from that upper region.
Tarā’ib does not mean “ribs” but “pelvic arch”
Some defenders move the key word closer to the anatomy by re-rendering it. If tarā’ib denotes the pelvic region, the verse points roughly where the organs actually are.
The “gushing fluid” is the blood of the aorta
A minority relocate the referent entirely, reading the passage as a description of arterial blood rather than reproductive fluid.
Taken individually, each of these has some force. Taken together, they have a different kind of significance — because they are not compatible with one another. If tarā’ib means the pelvic arch, it does not mean the woman’s chest. If the passage is about embryonic glands, it is not about the aorta. Each defence solves one difficulty by creating another, and each is fatal to at least two of its neighbours.

✕ marks pairs that cannot both be true. Each defence assigns a different referent to the same words — the woman’s chest, an embryonic gland, the pelvic arch, arterial blood. If any one is correct, the other three are wrong. A clear statement does not require four mutually exclusive explanations; a statement under rescue does.
This is the fingerprint of a text being defended rather than read.
Not a random mistake — the era’s mistake
The belief that seed originates near the spine was not invented in seventh-century Arabia. It was among the standing assumptions of ancient medicine, and it travelled.
So the verse does not merely contain an error. It contains the ordinary, ambient error of its world about where the seed of life comes from. That is exactly what one would expect of a seventh-century text — and exactly what one would not expect of a text carrying knowledge beyond its time.
How one verse became a global argument
The interpretive pressure on 86:7 is not ancient. It is roughly fifty years old, and it has an institutional history that can be dated.
The classical commentators felt no strain reading this verse, because they had no reason to. The strain begins when a modern movement — iʿjāz ʿilmī, the claimed “scientific inimitability” of the Qur’an — makes the text’s anatomical accuracy load-bearing for the case that it is divine.
The movement’s popular breakthrough came in 1976, when the French physician Maurice Bucaille — a gastroenterologist who had served as physician to King Faisal of Saudi Arabia — published La Bible, le Coran et la science. Bucaille argued that the Bible contained scientific errors while the Qur’an contained none, and concluded from that asymmetry that the Qur’an could not be of human authorship. The book was translated across the Muslim world and sold enormously. It gave its name to a whole approach: Bucaillism.
Eight years later the argument acquired an institution. In 1984 the Saudi-funded Muslim World League established the Commission on Scientific Signs in the Qur’an and Sunnah, headed by the Yemeni cleric Abdul Majeed al-Zindani — a figure later designated a Specially Designated Global Terrorist by the US Treasury. The Commission ran international conferences at which Western scientists were flown in, hosted and paid honoraria, then asked on camera to comment on Qur’anic passages read out to them; their replies were edited into daʿwah material that circulated for decades. The recruitment operation was documented by the Wall Street Journal in January 2002.
From there the claims propagated through the satellite-television and internet era — through the Indian preacher Zakir Naik and the Islamic Research Foundation, through the Turkish Harun Yahya operation, and through thousands of websites. The astrophysicist Nidhal Guessoum has catalogued the results: relativity, quantum mechanics, the Big Bang, black holes, genetics, embryology, geology, thermodynamics, even lasers and hydrogen fuel cells have all been “found” in the text.
This is the machinery that requires 86:7 to be right. Without it, the verse would sit undisturbed in the tradition, read as the commentators read it, and understood by most Muslims as a devotional statement about human origins rather than an anatomical thesis. It is the modern apologetic project — not the scripture, and not ordinary believers — that has staked a claim it cannot cover.
The sharpest objections come from Muslim scholars
The case against iʿjāz literature is not an outsider’s case. It has been pressed for decades, in mainstream Islamic and academic journals, by believing Muslim scientists and Qur’an scholars who regard the whole enterprise as a theological error as much as a scientific one.
Writing in Zygon in 2008 and at length in Islam’s Quantum Question (2011), Guessoum assesses and rejects the “scientific miraculousness” thesis, arguing it rests on a serious misunderstanding of how modern science works and a narrow reading of the Qur’an — and that it has become embarrassingly popular precisely because it is easy.
In the New Statesman in August 2008, Sardar wrote that extracting scientific facts or theories from these verses requires considerable mental gymnastics and distortions — and warned that when classical scholars urged the study of astronomy and anatomy, they were commending empirical inquiry, not claiming the Qur’an had pre-empted it.
Argues that the Qur’an is a source of guidance in faith and righteous action, and that the notion it contains all knowledge — scientific knowledge included — has never been a mainstream position in Muslim scholarship. The idea is a modern arrival dressed as tradition.
